Dr Philip Nitschke
The doctors background on euthanasia assisted suicide
Dr Philip Nitschke is one of the most important figures currently working in the end-of-life choices / voluntary euthanasia / assisted suicide movement globally.
Dividing his time between Australia & Europe, Dr Philip Nitschke is the Founder & Director of Exit International, a leading Voluntary Euthanasia/ Assisted Suicide information & advocacy non-profit.
In 1996, Dr Nitschke came to world attention when he became the first physician to administer a legal, lethal, voluntary injection using the Deliverance Machine* under Australia’s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act.
Under the ROTI Act, four of Dr Nitschke’s terminally ill patients used the law before the Australian Parliament overturned the law nine months later.
Dr Nitschke is the recipient of:
• Northern Territorian of the Year - 1997
He is a seven-time nominee for Australian of the Year (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) including twice a state finalist (2005 & 2006).
