Dr Philip Nitschke
Dr Philip Nitschke is one of the most important figures currently working in the end-of-life choices / assisted suicide / voluntary euthanasia movement globally.
Dividing his time between the US & Australia, Dr Philip Nitschke is the Founder & Director of Exit International, a leading Voluntary Euthanasia/ Assisted Suicide information & advocacy non-profit.
In 1996, Dr Nitschke came to world attention when he became the first physician to administer a legal, lethal, voluntary injection using the Deliverance Machine* under Australia’s Rights of the Terminally Ill Act. This Act made Voluntary Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide legal.
Under the ROTI Act, four of Dr Nitschke’s terminally ill patients used the law before the Australian Parliament intervened, overturning the law some nine months later.
* The 'Deliverance Machine' invented by Dr Nitschke is on display at the British Science Museum in London (ground floor, Wellcome Collection).
