Inorganic Salts
This Chapter looks at two common inorganic salts.
While these substances have been available for many years, it was the Dutch right to die group, Coöperatie Laatste Wil (CLW), who really drew public attention to the effectiveness and availability.
Known as ‘Middel Y’ and ‘Middel X’, these substances have become much talked about ever since.
The Pushback
With the rapid rise in the number of people ending their lives with these substances, there was an immediate push-back by the medical profession and various suicide prevention organisations.
In 2019 the Journal of the Dutch Medical Association, NTvG, published an editorial and a series of articles on these new substances.
The cover story was titled ‘The Rise & Fall of Agent X’.
Author, Stella Braam, argued that the group, CLW, were nothing more than ‘enthusiastic amateurs, blinded by enthusiasm and pressured by supporters’.
More Controversy
In 2022, a former Canadian chef called Ken Law started distributing sodium nitrite & nitrogen gas products via a range of websites.
In April 2023, Law became the subject of a UK sting operation by The Times newspaper and his websites all closed. Law was arrested in May 2023 and charged with two counts of assisting suicide.
In early 2024 his charges were upgraded to include 12 counts of first degree murder.
Law is in custody. His trial, which will attract signficant international attention, is expected in 2026.
