Going to Switzerland

Going to Switzerland: how to plan your final exit is a book that provides practical advice about assisted suicide in Switzerland.

Going to Switzerland is published in two formats: online and in print.

When it comes to assisted dying, Switzerland is unique. It is the only country in the world where foreigners can fly in and get help to die.

You do not have to be Swiss to get an assisted suicide in Switzerland.

Furthermore, you do not have to be terminally ill.

This means that elderly couples can die together.

For example, Athanasios Association (see www.athanasios.ch) specifically say that they help older couples who want to die together.

Swiss assisted suicide/ assisted dying laws are unique in every way.

The idea behind this short publication (2025 edition is available in both print and online formats) is to answer reader questions about all aspects of this end of life option.

Of course, the Swiss Option has never been the go-to choice for Exit, given the orgnaisation’s priority on DIY options.

However, we do acknowledge that some people like the idea of travelling to a foreign country (and do not mind – in the normal course of events – paying a lot of money) to get help to die. It is a matter a choice.

Both editions offer a valuable guide about how to plan for an assisted death in Switzerland.

Topics include:

  • legal framework that makes the Swiss Option possible
  • qualification criteria (including if you have a mental health diagnosis, eg. dementia)
  • different methods of death
  • different organisations (including Athanasios, Dignitas and The Last Resort association (which used the Sarco back in September 2024)

The book also details what to expect before, during and after an accompanied suicide including travel arrangements, Swiss immigration and events on the day.

Finally, we cover topics such as cremation, death certificates and costs/ refunds.

Going to Switzerland offers a useful starting point for researching the so-called ‘Swiss Option’.
